Bollas on Long-Distance Psychoanalysis

I enjoyed this New York Times essay by one of today's greatest psychoanalytic minds, Christopher Bollas, about his long-term telephone treatment of a schizophrenic writer who lived "on a remote island in a Norwegian fjord." Although face-to-face therapy is ideal for many reasons, it's becoming more common to treat patients via phone or Skype. I've done this with patients who have moved overseas, who are immobilized by injuries or surgeries, or who cannot leave the safety of their home.
